About animeVS

animeVS is a free browser game about building the best seven-fighter anime team. It is made and run by one independent developer, with no studio, no publisher and no account system.

What it is

You draft a squad from 156 fighters across 16 series, place each into one of seven roles, and see how far the team climbs a ten-rung ladder of anime dynasties. You can also challenge a friend in a live room, either building blind or bidding against each other in an auction, or try the daily guess-the-character puzzle. The idea came from basketball's "82-0" team-building games: a deterministic game where the same team always gets the same result, so every win comes from your choices rather than dice.

Deterministic by design

There is no randomness in scoring. Randomness only appears when fighters are drawn. Once you have a team, the result is pure arithmetic that the scoring guide lays out in full. That is what makes the game worth analysing: you can reason about why a team won.

How the ratings are decided

Ratings reflect each fighter's power in their own story. They are hand-tuned, then run through automated balance tests: thousands of simulated teams must stay unable to clear the full ladder by luck, a well-built team must still be able to, no calculation may produce an invalid number, and live auctions are simulated bot against bot to check they always finish fairly. These are judgement calls and fans will disagree. Tell us where you think a fighter is mis-rated through the Feedback button in the game.

Built with

animeVS is a React and Vite web app. Live rooms use a small Supabase database. The guides and character pages on this site are generated from the same data file the game runs on, so they always match the game.

Fan project notice

animeVS is an unofficial fan project made for enjoyment. All characters, names and series belong to their respective creators, studios and rights holders. This site is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any of them. No official artwork is used. If you are a rights holder and have a concern, please get in touch through the contact page and it will be looked at promptly.

Supporting the project

The game is free. If you enjoy it, you can support the developer on Ko-fi. Some content pages on this site may show advertising; the game screens never do.
